Do you only have a pound of wool from a special pet sheep? Have fiber with a staple length that is too long for mills to spin? Want to keep your processing local?

These days it can be hard for small or hobby farms to get their wool milled into yarn. Batch size, fiber quality, and staple length can all be factors in this. We want to help (especially if your staple length is over 6”)!

If you have sheep’s wool that you’d like turned into your very own yarn, we’d love to work with you to provide hand spinning services.

This service is designed to get you yarn from fleece that the mills can’t spin. We’ll work with you to plan your project from start to finish and help you coordinate fiber prep as needed.

Acceptance of project and pricing is based on the following factors, which also impact timeline:

• Weight of total fiber

• Fiber prep when received- the further along the yarn process the fiber is, the cheaper the yarn cost

• Number of plies - up to 3 plies for fingering weight and 4 plies for everything else up

• Staple length- longer staple length is easier to spin but also harder to get commercially spun well, so we prioritize it

• Desired yarn weight- fingering, sport, DK, worsted, aran, and bulky

• Spin type

Our pricing model below is for personal use yarn, up to 10lbs. If you’re a shepherd looking for wholesale pricing to sell your finished yarn in a retail setting, please check that box on our form. Our goal is to help our local farmers and wholesale pricing can be discussed.

HERE’S HOW WE PRICE

For personal projects, we price by the yard, per ply, at $0.20/yard. Your fiber must be:

1. between 0.5lb and 10lbs

2. staple length is more than 3” (when stretched out)

Your yarn will be:

1. single-ply, 2-ply, 3-ply, or 4-ply

2. fingering, sport, DK, worsted, aran, or bulky weight

3. in 100g skeins, with yardage not counted

1lb of fiber = max. 16 ounces = max. 4.5 x 100g skeins

Pricing may be impacted by the following:

• How dirty your wool is - has it already been washed, carded, etc?

• How smooth you want your yarn

• Adding a ply

• Providing the yardage count

• Providing skeins in different weights than 100g

• Washing / Scouring before spinning (outsourced, priced by the mill per lb)

• Carding (outsourced)

• Carding (by us)

Some of the services above can be provided at cheaper costs by other mills and we highly recommend that you support them directly! Our goal is to fill the gap that mills can’t!

If you need us to, we can manage the fiber prep and add a coordination fee per pound - please note that timeline for yarn turnaround is dependent on the local mill’s timeline if we need to outsource fiber prep.
