Do you only have a pound of wool? Have fiber with a staple length that is too long for mills to spin? Want to keep your processing local?

These days it can be hard for small or hobby farms to get their wool milled into yarn. Batch size, fiber quality, and staple length can all be factors in this. We want to help (especially if your staple length is over 6”)!

If you have sheep’s wool that you’d like turned into your very own yarn, we’d love to work with you to provide hand spinning services.

This service is designed to get you yarn from fleece that the mills can’t spin. We’ll work with you to plan your project from start to finish and help you coordinate fiber prep as needed!

Acceptance of project and pricing is based on the following factors, which also impact timeline:

• Weight of total fiber

• Fiber prep when received - the further along the yarn process the fiber is, the cheaper the yarn cost

• Number of plies - up to 3 plies for fingering weight and 4 plies for everything else up

• Staple length - longer staple length is easier to spin but also harder to get commercially spun well, so we prioritize it

• Desired yarn weight - fingering, sport, DK, worsted, aran, and bulky

• Spin type - worsted, woolen, or “spun from the cloud”

Our pricing model below is for personal use yarn, up to 10lbs. If you’re a shepherd looking for wholesale pricing to sell your finished yarn in a retail setting, please check that box on our form. Our goal is to help our local farmers and wholesale pricing can be discussed.

HERE’S HOW WE PRICE

For personal projects, we start our base pricing at $100 per pound, which equates to $6.25 per ounce. Finished yarn is provided in 100g skeins. To fit in the standard pricing category, your fiber must be:

1. between 1lb and 10lbs

2. staple length is more than 3”

3. already carded, in the form of roving, batts, or rolags

Your yarn will be:

1. single-ply or 2-ply

2. fingering, sport, DK, worsted, aran, or bulky weight

3. in 100g skeins, with yardage not counted

4. used by you

1lb of fiber = 16 ounces = 4.5 x 100g skeins

After the standard pricing, we have the following add-ons:

• Weight less than 1lb = we can absolutely spin this for you, but our minimum spinning fee is $80

• Adding a ply = $20 per pound, per ply (we can do up to 2-ply for fingering, 3-ply for sport, and 4-ply for everything else)

• Providing the yardage count = $3 per pound

• Providing skeins in different weights than 100g = $3 per pound

• Washing / Scouring (outsourced) = $16 per pound, done by a local mill (Skagit Woolen Works can provide this service at $14 per pound)

• Washing / Scouring (by us) = $20 per pound (project must be less than 3lbs)

• Carding (outsourced) = $18 per pound, done by a local mill (Skagit Woolen Works can provide this service at $16 per pound)

• Carding (by us) = $25 per pound if less than 3lbs and done on-farm ourselves

Some of the services above can be provided at cheaper costs by other mills and we highly recommend that you support them directly! Our goal is to fill the gap that mills can’t!

If you need us to, we can manage the fiber prep and add a coordination fee per pound - please note that timeline for yarn turnaround is dependent on the local mill’s timeline if we need to outsource fiber prep.

Example personal-use projects:

PROJECT 1: You have 3lbs of raw wool that has an 8” staple length and would like a 3-ply worsted weight yarn produced in 100g skeins, and will pick up your finished yarn at the farm

3lbs x [($100 for base pricing)+($20 for the additional ply)+($16 for outsourced washing / scouring)+($18 for outsourced carding)]=

3lbs x $154 = $462 = 13.6 skeins at $33.97 per skein

PROJECT 2: You have 8 ounces of roving and would like 2-ply fingering weight yarn in 100g skeins, with yardage provided, and need your finished yarn mailed to you.

[0.5lbs x ($3 for yardage count)] + $80 minimum + shipping =

$81.50+shipping = 2.3 skeins at $35.43 per skein
