Grown by a flock of Cheviot sheep in Arlington, WA, at Island Crossing Farm, a family farm where the sheep are raised for sheepdog training and meat.
Hand: medium wool, coarser in the hand but without any prickles or pokiness in any way. Can easily be worn against bare skin. Blooms beautifully with hot water blocking. Very springy and light.
Farmer’s Flock is our way of supporting local farmers and our fibershed while bringing you exclusive, small-batch, specialty fiber. Many small sheep farms end up burning, composting, or burying their wool because they don’t have the means to process it - even when the fiber is high quality. Sheep need to be shorn regardless, but up-front milling costs and coordination can be a barrier. We reach out to these farmers, pay them fair rates for their wool, and turn that fiber into something beautiful, from our hands to yours.
The wool is saved, the community supported, and you receive a one-of-a-kind fiber experience.
Outside of the quality of the fiber, hyper-locality, and limited quantities, what makes this yarn special is that we’re ensuring fair pay for everyone involved in this project; the farmer, the mill, and the shop. Profits are shared between three different businesses in an effort to continue the fibershed of the Pacific Northwest.
